Downtown DeFuniak Springs is the heart of a True Southern Town. Our picturesque Main Street connects visitors and residents with local culture, recreation, commerce and all the other perks of a walkable and historic downtown setting.
Founded in the 1880’s by the Pensacola and Atlantic railroad company, DeFuniak Springs is settled along the shore of the perfectly round, spring-fed Lake DeFuniak
From the start, our community served as an ideal location for a resort town and one of America’s earliest cultural movements: the Chautauqua. In fact, DeFuniak Springs was founded on the principles of the Four Pillars of Chautauqua: arts, education, recreation and spirituality.
Learning and teaching have always been an important part of our community. Speakers of DeFuniak Spring’s past laid the foundation for today’s TedTalks, and our original community design is the inspiration for the now-popular New Urbanism Movement.
At any time of the year in DeFuniak Springs, you might explore the original campus of the Florida Chautauqua along beautiful Chipley Park, visit a new Smithsonian Institute exhibit (part of the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street program), take the Florida Humanities DeFuniak Tour, or simply enjoy the sights, sounds, shopping and eateries along Baldwin Avenue.
See for yourself why the Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and soak in the historic wonder of the homes, churches and natural landscape surrounding Lake DeFuniak. Our heritage and culture lay the foundation of our character as a true Southern town – one defined by hospitality, tradition, community and warmth. Residents enjoy cool summer breezes from their porches as children play safely throughout welcoming neighborhoods, and visitors are reminded of the joys of small-town living, as they hear the call to make DeFuniak Springs their home.
No matter the reason, we invite you to discover for yourself why DeFuniak Springs is “Naturally Well-Rounded”.
